Secret Beach - Kauapea Beach



This beach is approximately 1 1/2 miles long with fine white sand, black lava rock, stunning cliffs as a backdrop, lush vegetation and enchanting waterfalls. This is a beach for accepting adults as there is a tendency for clothes optional sun bathers at the east and west end of the beach. To avoid the possibility of nude swimmers and sun worshippers stay to the centre of the main beach near the trail end. Nudity is illegal however not many at Secret Beach seem concerned as the beach is randomly patrolled.
You also will have a wonderful view to the east of the Kilauea Lighthouse. Spend some time here exploring the lava pools, waterfalls and wonderful sandy nooks. Swimming here can be dangerous as there is no reef protection.
DIRECTIONS: 4 miles plus 10 minute walk
Head east [left] out of Princeville on highway 56. Take the 2nd entrance of Kalihiwai road [after climbing out of the big canyon made by Kalihiwai River] at mile post 24. Turn north [left] on Kalihiwai road and then take a quick right onto a dirt road. Follow the dirt road .5 mile to a small parking lot at the end. Park in the lot or along the dirt road using care to remove all valuables from your car. Follow the trail for about 7 minutes as it descends 180 feet and traverses 1/3 mile [about 500 steps] to the beach.
